My Project

Many of my students love to work in groups. They love to build with cardboard and hot glue. I saw this lesson that allows for large and lightweight building projects and knew it would be a big hit at our school. Many of my students aspire to work in construction or have family members that do so. I cannot safely teach projects with wood, saws and hammers but I can introduce the ideas of buildings and how to think in three dimensions with these fun (and safe) materials.

I have searched for years for this solution to my three dimensional dilemma; how do we create realistic buildings in the art room with limited space and materials?

This project will appeal to my learners who are more spatially gifted and I am very excited to introduce this lesson to my upper middle and high school students.

I find that my middle school boys and high school boys prefer to build in 3D than to draw. When I can get these boys working in groups their engagement skyrockets and the dripline issues go way down among this population. I am hopeful that if this lesson is funded it will be a big hit for years to come. There is an engineering component to it as well in terms of civil engineering in creating buildings that actually stand and can support the loads of the structure itself.
