My Project

Being a new Spanish teacher, I'm excited about my students learning another language through visuals, audio, and hands-on (play) learning.

For example, the game Jenga is very useful for verb conjugation: Each Jenga block will have pronoun, followed by a verb on each side, which can be conjugated according to the lesson and level, from Spanish 1 through 5 (though I teach 1 and 2, this year.

) An example: tú ... caminar. When my first year students play this they will use the present "tú caminas" whereas a Spanish 2 student would conjugate this in the more difficult future tense, "tú caminarás." Other games which will build vocabulary are the Lotería (Bingo) and Chutes and Ladders games.

Part of learning another language is also incorporating the history, important people, and culture of the countries which speak that language, hence the posters and books. This is especially important in my class because many of my students come from Latino homes, and representation matters!

Lastly, I am also an art historian, and am excited to read about Spanish-speaking artists as part of my "cultural" lessons. For example, when my students are learning about telling time in Spanish and using clock vocabulary, I plan on dedicating a snippet of time to the Spanish surrealist artist, Salvador Dali, who painted the melting clocks in Persistence of Memory.
