My Students

With the increasing need to focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education, PKYDRS FIRST robotics team, Roaring Riptide 4118, along with the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) programs in 6th-8th grades are designing and leading creative and sustainable approaches for introducing and supporting STEM activities that encourage, engage, and support our underserved, underrepresented populations.

Specifically, in the PK Yonge and Gainesville community, we face the issue of inaccessible and expensive technology that is needed for people with disabilities to elevate their quality of life.

The primary problem is that this field has been dominated by a limited number of corporations whose goal is to make profit. The technology's price has not fallen with the ability to produce it faster and cheaper, thus creating the problem of assistive technology being largely inaccessible to the general population, which includes youth in our underserved and underrepresented populations.

My Project

Using STEM concepts, such as the design process, we will identify specific individual’s challenges, conduct research of past ideas, review current technologies, formulate design concepts, create prototypes in 3-D design software, and then 3-D print or build prototypes for testing. Specific examples of disabilities we’d like to focus on supporting include Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Cerebral Palsy, and other limited motor control disabilities.

A couple of ideas we have are to create and share guides, videos, & documentation for adapting toys as well as adapting 12-volt power wheel jeeps as an affordable mobility option to wheelchairs.

Additionally, we could leverage our connection with ATMakers.org to share our ideas with a larger audience. The overall project vision is to consult with our local school district to support individuals with disabilities to help in areas where they struggle daily and leverage our STEM skills to improve their quality of life.
