Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are located on the west side of Chula Vista in one of the more challenging parts of the city. My students have been exposed to the ideas of STEAM and all that it entails. This project could potentially bring an opportunity to give students the hands-on experience with STEAM. They are the type of kids who have parents working long hours just to make ends meet. My school is considered a Title I school with support beyond just education. Our campus has psychological services for students and parents, nutritional support, and medical services all located on our campus. My school serves as a central hub for our respected zip code in bringing the holistic well-being of all families.

My Project

With the resources requested students will be able to engage in various computer coding programs that are online. Using the Snap Circuits 3D Illumination will help increase students motivation while at the same time providing them with repeated opportunities to be self directed learners. The Star Wars Droid Inventor Kit program we have available for the students allows students to grow at their own pace by providing students multiple opportunities to feel successful and show their coding abilities and collaborating with their classmates on building & coding. Working with Wonder Workshop Dash Robot, students will be able to learn how to code on their computers as well as enhance their math skills, specifically the mathematical practice of attending to precision when looking at the Arduino software provided. This will also help prepare students for the Common Core exams which is a computer adaptive test. Lastly, the Sphero SPRK+ STEAM Educational Robot will expose the students to JavaScript coding allowing them to learn how to program sensors and javascript at the same time. Coding is one of the most important skill a student can have. Through coding, students are able to improve in their critical thinking skills and their content knowledge. Improving students coding abilities will open new possibilities for them.
