My Students

Criss-Cross Applesauce! The chemistry students are bringing science magic to the neighboring kindergarten! Our high school wants to make chemistry magical for the kindergarteners with fun and safe chemical experiments: chromacolors, flubber, 3-D sidewalk paint, and more!

Our high school is a public school with grades 9-12.

Our school is rural community, not a wealthy school, but one that holds fast to tradition. Our students want to take their love for science to the neighboring kindergarten class. Our entire community has about 25% poverty level. The high school students want to make a difference in their community; over forty high school chemistry students team up with a special education class at our school. Together, they plan the experiments, practice, make up solutions, collect two liter bottles, and travel to the neighboring kindergarten together. The students here are hard-working. Last year, the students planted over two hundred trees on the school property. They are not afraid of hard work and love to perform service that makes a difference.

My Project

Student leaders are responsible for understanding the underlying science concepts. Students design and implement the entire project so that they can better convey these concepts to “their own” students, kindergarten students at local elementary schools. The chemistry students will select, plan, and demonstrate every experiment with an eye to the state standards. Together, they will plan fun labs for the students at the neighboring elementary school. Chemistry students will travel by magic carpet to the local elementary schools to perform labs, magic shows, and read stories for all of the students. An innovative approach using an interactive environment to generate extraordinary science meant to make chemistry fun and relevant for every student.

Apple-ka-dabra is a project close to our heart.

The chemistry students love working with the special education class at our high school. The special education class gets an opportunity to be leaders, too! This class does much of the work prepping for the trip to the kindergarten. The little ones are too young to judge; this project lets our students with special needs both interact with their high school peers and polish leadership skills, all while doing fun science experiments.
