My Students

In our high performing community, our students "do school," and care greatly about getting good grades, but often miss out on meaningful learning in the process. More specifically, many of them have lost their love of reading. They view reading as a boring chore, one that they do begrudgingly, or even worse, don't do at all.

My students crave choice and independence in their learning.

I believe they need more choice in what they read and study, to entice them to be lifelong readers and learners. Also, as in any classroom, I have a huge range of reading abilities. By giving them choice, I can better differentiate instruction and use reading conferences to make sure each student has a book that works for him or her.

My Project

This year, we will be doing apocalyptic book clubs to pair with Lord of the Flies. We will read Lord of the Flies all together as a class, focusing on the essential question: What do humans do when they no longer have the laws of society governing them? Once we finish Lord of the Flies, students will be grouped into teams of 3-4 to choose and read a book with an apocalypse in it, focusing on the same essential question. I have read and identified ten books that all have the necessary qualities to work for the project.

In order for this project to work smoothly, we need several copies of each book so that every student has a copy to read.

Students will have an opportunity to look through each book and select the one they are most interested in reading. This element of choice creates immediate buy-in. Plus, students are already primed for discussion after Lord of the Flies. I love this unit and think it is a really great way to incorporate choice reading, while also building community and discussion skills in the classroom.
