Help me give my students an AP Research support book, MLA/APA Guidelines, binders, post-it notes, beginners statistics books, and looseleaf for class notes/writing/Harvard outlines.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am thrilled to report that we had eight students successfully pass the Advanced Placement (AP) Seminar course/exam this year. We offered the class for the first time and the learning curve was tremendous for both myself and the students. The students learned how to work cooperatively and professionally to create a presentation, defend their research and position, and write a complex paper following the MLA format.
The AP Seminar class is the first class in the Capstone Diploma sequence followed by AP Research.
So, this will be our first year offering students AP Research. This mini-grant will support students as they learn how to 1) conduct research, 2) create surveys/studies, 3) use statistical analysis, 4) write a complex paper akin to a thesis, and 5) defend that paper.
In this mini-grant I am asking for your support in providing the students with workbooks for research writing, statistics, and copies of the MLA/APA guides. This will be the first time that students work intently, for a full academic, year, on a research question of their creation. These are the experiences and skills that they will need most serve them in college. We understand this grant is spendy, but the success of this past years AP Seminar class shows me that early preparation and laying the foundations in the fall will set the students up for success in the spring.
