The three students who sat down together to write this proposal are three selfless individuals. They heard be talking about student-centered Donors Choose and asked if they could try to write a grant proposal. I agreed - what a great start at building community relationships. The three students are all juniors this year and I was lucky to teach them last year as well. They are always thinking about others and I asked if they wanted to write a proposal for books. They were excited - they love books!
Students will learn about the creation of HeLa cells and develop a critical and informed perspective on this scientific advancement. Students will also be able to make a personal connection and character connection to science-based information. Students will discuss and analyze the books through teamwork, communication, and Q & A sessions. Students will read about and discuss problem-solving in a real world context. Students will be able to apply both personal and educational connections to an argumentative essay in preparation for the AP Language and Composition test. Students will also reflect and establish metacognitive thinking skills - accessing higher-level thinking.
In Their Own Words
We would like to get books purchased for our classroom. We would like for Donors Choose donors to help us in buying the books, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. We would like to have the books to read for class and it looks interesting and it is a new bestseller.
We are leaders in the classroom because we are writing the proposal for all of us. We do not need to be recognized, but just want to help our friends. We do not see this as a leadership opportunity, but a classroom opportunity. We are able to help others by writing this proposal.
This project is important to us and our school because we are getting new books that we can read and share with other students in the school. We are solving a problem of not having the money to pay for the books for the classes. We are also adding books to the school, and they are new books.
