This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

George R.R. Martin said, "A reader lives a thousand live before he dies. The man who never reads only lives one." Too many of my students are living one life! I've lived several through my love for books and I would like to provide my students with the same opportunity.

I have a group of eager 11th grade students, ready and prepared to take on the AP English Literature and Composition exam.

My students attend a small school in the Bronx. The resources at my school are limited and many of the desired materials are not available for them. Many of my students are experiencing literature for the first time, and come in not understanding how books can reveal global truths about the human condition. However, the lack of materials have not slowed down my students' desire to learn and develop their abilities to analyze and understand books in a way they never thought possible.

My Project

Often times students complain about books not being relatable or having any "real-life" significance. Therefore, I have chosen two books that I believe will grab my students' attention while also presenting them with complex ideas that are relevant to everyone in my classroom. Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye, and Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns are two incredible pieces of literature that explore issues of gender, identity and war. Both of these texts are fascinating reads, and do not lack in complexity. These two texts have also popped up on the AP exam multiple times, and if the students are exposed to this material they will be better prepared to tackle their free response essays, but most importantly develop a love for literature and all we can learn from reading.

With your support my students will have the opportunity to experience new literature that may otherwise be unavailable to them.

I know that reading can open the minds of our young readers and provide them with a new outlook on reading and education. This project is more than getting books to help students pass an exam. This project is to help students of the Bronx become life-long readers and learners.
