My Students

The ants go marching one by one...... Everyone loves a good picnic with apple pie, but everyone also knows a good picnic is likely to be invaded by ants. This project will help my students learn more about the uninvited guests that show up at their picnics, as well as the apples that make their pie.

My students are excited to come to school each day and to learn from one another.

They enjoy working in collaborative groups and sharing their knowledge with each other. My students enjoy using their critical thinking skills to evaluate new information. I often integrate the arts into our lessons so my students can make personal connections to their learning and demonstrate what they know in creative ways.

My Project

To go along with our reading anthology story Ants & science plant unit, I am requesting 3 apple peelers, a variety of books on apples and ants, and 2 Osmo gaming systems. After reading the anthology story, we will extend our learning by reading additional books on ants. Students will record the new information they learned in their journals. They will write down unanswered questions and collaborate with peers to find the answers. Each group will create a presentation for the class to present what they have learned about ants. Students will use the Osmo's Masterpiece app to help create realistic ant drawings for their presentations. We will time our Ants story with our science plant unit. We will read the apple books to learn how they are grown and what they are used for. At the end our unit, we will have a picnic celebration on the grass. Here, we will use the apple peelers to help us prepare a healthy snack and keep our fingers crossed that we aren't invaded by ants!

This project will help my students become 21st Century Learners by implementing a strong foundation for inquiry by providing them with opportunities to enhance their community, communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity skills.
