My Students

When I was in the fifth grade, I remember a girl by the name of Ellen. I remember being on the bus, and seeing my friends make fun of Ellen. I never joined in, but I never stopped them either. If I could go back, would I try, knowing what I know now about the bullying epidemic, being a teacher?

Our students are primarily minority children from low to mid income households, many being single and/or working parent families.

They come from foster homes, some live in shelters, some with relatives other than mother or fathers. These children are facing hardships none of us would care to experience. These factors play a huge role in the actions and decisions they make each day. The lack of a stable home life and proper mentoring drives our students to make poor decisions. They bring these disadvantages to school, which sometimes leads to taking out their frustrations on their peers. This then lends itself to an increase in bullying and fighting. This is a growing problem in our schools.

My Project

Our school desperately needs our students to watch the anti-bullying documentary. The students can only benefit from this opportunity and hopefully come out with knowledge and compassion. Our hope is that our students will learn from the stories of other children who have been hurt by this epidemic, and think twice next time they think of saying or doing something negative to a peer.

We have begun an anti-bullying campaign at our school aimed at educating students and teachers alike on the dangers and consequences of negative behavior.

We would like to continue this and build upon what we have already done in order to stop this epidemic and save lives. This is a situation where children are getting hurt, even dying, and this is a problem we have the power to solve. Together we can make the schools a safe and fun place for all children to learn and grow.
