This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students at FIHS are recent arriving immigrants to the United States and are English Language Learners (ELLs). As a 9th/10th grade teacher, many of my students are experiencing a classroom in the United States for the first time. Early on in our curriculums, we introduce annotation strategies for students to engage with a text and work on their reading comprehension skills. One of the most effective ways we have seen success is through color-coded annotation strategies. Using a 4-color pen and highlighters, students color code their annotations of a text for connections, opinions, translations and definitions, questions, summaries, and pictures to show comprehension and critical thinking of what they have read.

Your donations to this project will make sure each of my students has an annotation kit to use throughout the year.

Each pouch will have one of each highlighter color, black and blue pens, and pencils. Reading comprehension is such an important skill for students to practice and can be even more challenging in a language they are not fluent in. The annotation strategies we teach and the method in which we do it, have given students a way to make engagement with a text less daunting. Please help us provide these supplies to each student in the upcoming school year.
