Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I love how compassionate and respectful my students are. Starting the first Anime Club this year has really brought together 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who once felt like they were outcasts. In joining the club, they have found a commonality among one another which has allowed them to build a community together. My students will often chant Anime quotes like "One for all!" to express the unity between members of the club. Some students even express that "the nerds now have a safe place to geek out."

Although Anime may be perceived as simply just Japanese cartoons, Anime Club members have been strategically analyzing specific anime arcs to study a variety of topics such as segregation, utopian/dystopian societies, socioeconomic inequality, the effects of role models, intrinsic/extrinsic motivation, the underdog complex, and character development.

By studying these topics in Anime Club, my students were able to take the knowledge gained from whole group discussions and apply it to content class discussions. For example, when reading The Giver by Lois Lowry, club members made deep, thorough connections between the type of society detailed and the oppression its citizens were living under. The growth they made in school was truly astounding!

My Project

Anime NYC is an annual convention where Anime fans meet and celebrate their passion and love for Anime. During this convention, fans are usually cosplaying (dressed up) as their favorite characters while they listen in on panels, meet voice actors, creators, and directors, and look at new, never before seen merchandise.

My students have been wanting to go to Anime NYC but have not had the financial resources to attend, given the amount of poverty they face; it is their dream to walk amongst cosplayers, learn about creative artistry and find out how they can create their own Mangas (anime books), as well as nurture their own creativity.

Anime Club members also wish to create their own cosplays if they are able to attend. Upon completion of the trip, students will hold a mini convention for middle school students where they will share all that they have learned about the job opportunities available in the anime field - voice over, anime news writer, content writer, storyboard artist, editor, etc.
