My Students

I am the seventh grade science teacher and anime club advisor at a middle school with approximately six hundred and fifty students. I welcome students in sixth through eighth grade into my classroom at lunch once a week, and sometimes after school. They nhave fun and make new friends while watching anime movies and shows, drawing, reading manga (anime style books) and discussing with other students. Anime is a Japanese style of film and television animation that has high quality and plot. Examples of anime include Sword Art Online, Pokémon, My Hero Academia, and Naruto.

I find that students who are interested in anime really appreciate a safe space to relax and share their interests without fear of judgment from other students at school.

I have heard stories and even witnessed students be bullied for enjoying anime. My room is a haven for students who love to read manga, watch anime, do cosplay and more.

My Project

The project will provide a small collection of books that will form the beginning of an anime/manga library for our club. Students will be allowed to check out books that interest them and try them out, without having to pay. This is a great way to engage reluctant readers because the manga style is more like a comic book. They can try out the books and then only spend the money to buy them, once they know they are interested.

This whole project is really about providing kids with the resources to enjoy a fun and safe club environment at a school with very few special interest clubs available to students.

The project will also provide high quality DVD movies for my students to watch together and discuss. In the past, it has been difficult to find affordable options for movies for the Anime Club. Finally, this project will provide fun prizes (like stickers/postcards) for students to receive when they attend club meetings.
