I made it through my first year as a teacher (WOO!) and Anime Club successfully hosted their first movie premier event! We met our goal for the USB drives to make our digital library and are just waiting (too excited!) for them to come in. Our next big project is just as exciting: Make our own Anime/Manga!
What I am trying to do is provide a way for these students to get experience in publishing and animating their own illustrations using technology.
We are going to collaborate with the Write Club and Art classes to create our own Anime style show and comic book that incorporates elements of our school, faculty, and student body. Our hopes are that once familiar with the programs on new technologies, we can put out a new volume or episode each month!
As a performing arts school, many of these Anime Club members are artists, writers, and actors. These projects will allow them to express themselves and showcase their talents in a new way with an emphasis on technology.
When my students aren't doing school academic work, they are are working on projects from their respective majors and minors. This means that they are singing, drawing, playing musical instruments, or acting. In our Anime Club, we have all majors, but have a shared passion for all things Anime.
Using the apps and programs available to Apple products on an IPad, my students will be able to use their variety of talents to do two major projects: 1) write and illustrate a Manga (comic book) and 2) illustrate and animate their very own Anime show.
Students will be able to work together and make a collaborative projects not only across clubs, but across grade levels as well. Our goal with the manga is to publish a new volume once a month or once every two months. The Anime will be a 'shorts' series where the students will show highlights of the Manga on the morning announcements.
Something that is extremely important to me however, is giving them an opportunity to have material for future usage in portfolios for college applications or even job applications. This is something that they can physically have to show to people and spotlight their skills and give them that extra boost when applying for future endeavors.
