Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each day, students enter the Media Lab eager to make their project ideas come to life, and can't wait to begin filming, editing, designing, and coding. Stop-motion animation is one of those projects that brings a student's vision to life and melds so many different skills into one beautiful production.

Our school is an incredible mix of students from different backgrounds who all come together to make incredible things in the Maker Shop!

About 60% of our students are Latino and about the same percentage are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Being in the middle of Marin county, there is a middle-class and affluent population as well, making for a truly diverse student body. Students in the Computer Multimedia and Maker Club programs exercise both the technical and the creative/design parts of their brain to forge impressive digital creations.

My Project

Stop motion animation is awesome! From script and set design to filming, editing, visual and sound effects, this project has it all. But students still struggle during filming trying to place the camera where they want it and have it stay reliably, resorting to duct tape on chair legs to get the shot angles and camera motion they want. Even with this effort, a single slip can ruin an entire day's filming. With the addition of gooseneck stands, students will finally be able to mount their webcams on proper adjustable stands, giving them the kind of control and stability past students only dreamt of, allowing for complex camera motions to make their animations come alive. Having a class set of microphones will allow students to enliven their films with recorded sound effects and voice-overs.

Great buildings need a solid foundation, and so do my students' webcams.

With versatile and reliable stands, simple student animations can become impressive high-quality productions with unique and changing perspectives, and microphones will allow these silent films to burst to life! No longer spending their time on creating clunky camera mounts with duct tape, students can focus on the art of their film production, creating final products that are worthy of their efforts!
