Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am the advisor for the Animal Welfare Club which teaches my urban, inner city students to respect and value animals both in the community and in shelters. We meet and discuss the many benefits of spaying and neutering, how animals are used to help and aid people, the benefits of maintaining a pet such as a cat or dog, in addition to how to help the many strays that are often found throughout our city of Paterson.

This club helps students respect strays and figure out ways to help them while also being safe and staying safe.

Throughout the year I bring in several therapy dogs to show students the benefits of animal therapy. I work with Archer the Therapy Dog and bright and beautiful therapy dogs to expose my students to the handlers and dogs.

Over the years this club has provided multiple benefits to inner city students with respect to animals and I hope to provide even more through generous donations of material and supplies. Books and puzzles give great examples and help students to open up and talk to each other and me about their animal experiences.

Caring for an animal teaches empathy, respect, understanding and responsibility which are all important to build resilience and grit.
