My Students

We live in a densely populated area of a large city that shares many of the challenges facing other cities of this size. As teachers, we are sensitive to the fact that many of our students struggle to get their basic needs met. All of our students receive free or reduced lunch and breakfast and many of our students are dealing with some kind of significant trauma. Our classroom is the primary age level (three- to six-year-olds) of a diverse Montessori public school. Our classroom is a safe environment designed to help us pursue our natural curiosities to learn as well as learn how to peacefully engage and grow with the members of our community.

My Project

These Montessori cultural items will be perfect for my little learners. The animal sorting materials will allow children to develop an understanding of how the continents of our world differ based on the animals present on each continent. This will also allow us to discuss climates and habitats of the different animals.

The children will also be able to practice their reading skills as they match the animal word cards with each continent and animal as well.

The flag materials will help the children to learn more about the differences and similarities between the different countries of North and South America. They will be able to draw flags, label them, and glue them onto a map they create of those continents. The irresistible flags can be used by our youngest learners as a way to practice mindful walking, by holding one small flag carefully as they walk on the line around our classroom.
