Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a teacher at an alternative school, our staff is constantly attempting to provide experiences for a students that expose them to activities they might otherwise not have. Also, we want to engage the students with “out of the box” learning experiences and challenges. With that in mind, we created the alternative middle school fishing club, which has members from our district’s two alternative middle schools.
Amongst the goals of the fishing club was to teach a skill that provides a wholesome activity for the students that they could also participate in during non-school days.
Our fishing club was also designed to teach patience, social skills with others, as well as even the ability to manage disappointment if they were not able to catch a fish. It was hoped that all these skills would help develop some resiliency in these students, who have been placed in the alternative setting for social-emotional disabilities.
Also, as we are in an urban district, we wanted to let our students explore various green spaces within our region. This would allow them to experience “the great outdoors” and learn about nature, conservation, science, and geography in a hands on setting!
Most importantly, we wanted to provide positive adult role models for these students, as many were either in foster care or group homes. This is the most rewarding aspect as the children were drawn to the positive attention.
Last year, we started the club with extremely inexpensive fishing gear, but they broke easily and led to frustration by having to spend time making field repairs. If we had higher quality equipment, we would be able to provide our students with these experiences for years to come.
