My Students
Can I get a drum roll please? The winner is... Young Adult Literature! Books that display some "bling" (i.e. American Library Association award stickers) are always the hot reads in my classroom.
My students are an at-risk group of developing readers from a small, sub-rural high school in Michigan.
They want to explore life's opportunities in an authentic way and with their new-found love of reading, they understand that this kind of exploration is possible through books like this one.
My Project
The books on this list are award-winning books for young adult readers. Most of the titles have appeared on the Young Adult Library Service Association award winner lists, which honors the best books published for young adults (ages 12-18).
My students need fresh and engaging new texts, especially as they form habits of lifelong readers. Some of the titles being requested are Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, The Pull of Gravity, and Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe.
After teaching high school English for a number years, I want to ensure that my classroom library represents new authors and fresh perspectives.
Just as adult readers express excitement about recently released books, students want to read what everyone is talking about. For low-income students like mine, there are little opportunities at home to read these brand-new books. With your generosity, my students can fuel their love of reading.
