My Students

My students, although they love to read, still don't know all of the classic folktales and children's stories. In our classroom, we're pushing them to really focus on the plot -- what happened and how, and they need books with strong characters and clear plots to reinforce this skill.

My students are four-year-olds who go to school in the most underserved community in Washington D.C.

They are curious, bright, hysterical and full of energy. They enjoy learning, and sitting down to listen to a book is one of the best parts of our day.

My Project

I chose books that are a combination of classic folktalkes (Hansel and Gretel, Three Little Pigs), but also newer books with strong plots (Wemberly Worried, Knufflebunny). These are great books that have strong characters and clear plots that we can incorporate into learning how to analyze characters, resolutions and plots. They're also just great stories that are engaging and absolutely memorable.

While I want my students to be strong readers and have great analytical skills, I also want them to fall in love with books and literature.

This project is a way to get great quality books into my classroom that reinforce the basic comprehension reading skills they will need to know.
