This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students reside in one of the poorest congressional districts in the country, and the pandemic has had a particularly severe impact on their community. Compounding the health complications and losses of life, the interruption of the education of its school-aged residents has presented an additional challenge for the neighborhood.

In the era of remote learning, unreliable, intermittent, or non-existent computer and internet access has inhibited their learning and widened the achievement gap.

Teachers have attempted to narrow this disparity by mailing students items they need--such as hard copies of texts, notes of encouragement, and self-care supplies--to continue learning and to nurture their physical and mental health during unprecedented times.

My Project

When students and staff members left school on Friday, March 13, 2020 (an ominous day if there ever were one), they believed they would return three days later for the start of another week. In forty-eight hours, school life, as they knew it, would change dramatically. On Sunday afternoon, the school community received news that classes would transition to an online platform, effective immediately, and teachers and students scrambled to adjust. Suddenly, the bell stopped ringing, chairs and desks became beds and kitchen tables, and Smartboard displays were replaced with Google Classroom streams.

The era of remote learning had commenced, and post offices across America serviced teachers' requests to mail everything--from packets of assignments to journals and art supplies to birthday cards--to their students to ensure the continuation of their learning and well-being.

Uncertainty about the upcoming school year looms, and whether schools open fully or partially or not at all remains to be seen. One thing teachers are certain about is their likelihood to return to the line at their local post office to mail their students who are at home, whether by circumstance or by choice, what they need to maximize their learning and get through this turbulent time. The materials in this project--envelopes, stamps, packing tape, and birthday cards--provide the logistical support teachers like me need to promote learning across the miles.
