My Project

The American Library Association recently announced the winners of major awards for literature for young people, and these books, in addition to other highly-reviewed books, must be on the shelves of the Westover Hills Elementary School library! The collection of books in this Donors Choose project reflect the diversity and complexity of the human experience as well as the beauty of the world in which our students reside.

Books empower students to see themselves in the stories they read while broadening worldviews through exposure to experiences beyond their own.

Books, like mirrors, can reflect our own experiences and perspectives. Books, like windows, can let us look in on the lives and experiences of others. Books, like sliding glass doors, let us step into and be a part of other worlds. The books in this project represent various cultures, identities, abilities, and backgrounds, helping students see themselves and others in the stories they read. These books not only promote a deeper understanding of different communities, but the books also encourage students to celebrate both their similarities and differences.
