Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in the special populations group. Often, due to the nature of the disability or difficulty with logistics, they do not get the opportunities to travel, play at the beach or explore a forest.

This project will benefit my students by giving them that opportunity to explore our ecosystem and wildlife in their "natural" environment.

My Project

This project will serve over 700 students and staff each year, ranging in grade levels from Kindergarten to 5th grade, including a special needs population.

By renovating an existing, yet non-utilized, open courtyard into a simulated outdoor wildlife viewing area with immersive exhibits, this project will provide insight into the conservation, biology and ecology of the commonly found animals and plants in Florida.

In addition, it will provide teachers and students, opportunities to enhance learning and mastering the standards in the areas of interdependence, civic responsibilities and the world in spatial terms. Children can expand on nature-related learning that helps develop observation and investigative skills, imagination, creativity, and a sense of wonder that is the basis for lifelong learning.

The children of today are less connected with nature than in times past. Many students lead sedentary lifestyles, spending much time in a virtual learning environment and not experiencing nature, Florida’s wildlife species and their natural habitats.

Many studies show that children are spending much more time in front of a screen than they spend exploring the world outside, especially now with social distancing and limited opportunities due to Covid-19.

This area, with your help, will bring to life the animals found in Florida in their "natural" habitats. The slate tiles will be painted to create a life-like water source, depicting fish, tadpoles and other wildlife in their water habitat. In addition to the already existing live indigenous plants, life-like animals will be placed strategically to bring to life this peaceful, natural preserve.
