I am a Pre- Kindergarten teacher in an equity plus school. Our student body predominately comes from lower income families. My students have been placed in my class because they are at risk academically. A couple of months ago I was privileged enough to take two workshops on the advantages of outdoor play. The workshops stressed the importance of bringing the classroom outdoors. My children love to play outside. We spend a lot of time reading stories and going on long walks. I would love to set up different centers outside just like I do in the classroom. The children would benefit greatly because there is so much more room to move around. In the classroom you are very limited in what you can do. Outside we have plenty of space in order for the children to explore and run around. With so many children overweight now a days this will give them the freedom to move around more freely without the constraints of the classroom. I have found some wonderful outdoors kits approved by the authors of POEMS. POEMS stand for Preschool Environment Measurement Scale. They provide direction to teachers who want to offer high quality programs to preschoolers when they are outdoors. This is exactly what I want to do. I want to bring what I am teaching indoors outside. I feel my children would benefit the most from the Music Preschool Outdoor Kit, Math Preschool Outdoor Kit and the Science Preschool Outdoor Kit. These are the areas my children are most interested in and that I want to enhance. These kits would enable me to work with the students in a healthier environment and let me incorporate the use of space and natural surroundings into my teaching. My students do not get the chance to play outside when they get home. They either do not have a backyard or the parents are too tired after working two jobs to take them outside to play. I appreciate any consideration you can give my proposal. Thank You!
