An Ocean of Creativity From Picture Books and Play-doh

Help me give my students a small library of picture books to build students' literacy skills and assist their language development. Picture books are most beneficial because I could do various activities not limited to the original texts.

My Project

I am a passionate new speech therapist, dedicated to making a difference in the lives of my students. Working at a low-income public school, I am faced with a large caseload and limited resources. However, I refuse to let that hinder my mission to help these children thrive. Every single one of my students deserves the chance to succeed, and I have found that vibrant visuals are key to their development. I am committed to building their literacy skills through the use of engaging picture books.

Due to the various language levels of my students, picture books provide me the flexibility to focus on teaching core words through the repetition of images, expanding their utterances with sentence modeling in the books, learning new vocabulary by describing pictures, practicing basic concepts, and much more.

In addition, these picture book choices allow me to promote neurodiversity, particularly because 50% of my students are in an autism-focused classroom. Play doh also complements book activitiesby providing students with a means to express themselves. Students enjoy playing with play doh. By engaging in play-doh activities, I am able to assist and nurture my students' social and pragmatic skills. The problem-solving cards from Super Duper enable my students to practice independence skills while also enjoying the learning process.

This humble library, colorful play-doh, and engaging picture cards hold the power to transform the lives of countless students who walk through my classroom doors each year. The impact of these resources will be far-reaching, igniting a love for learning that will stay with my students for a lifetime.
