Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach mathematics to 11th and 12th graders at Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School, a public school in the South Bronx. The more students can imagine and participate in the real-life dynamic of mathematical situations, the more success they will have. I was able to borrow an LCD projector from colleagues on a few occasions and found their use to be incredibly valuable for student learning. One of the reasons that students are unsuccessful in mathematics is that they do not see how it is relevant in their lives. Being able to create real-life images can help them understand that math is a part of the world. With the help of an LCD projector, I can create moving images ahead of time and the students can understand the lesson more clearly. We will be able to simulate real-world situations in the classroom. For example, last year I used an example of erosion for a lesson in linear functions. When I realized that the students were having great trouble picturing this situation, I began drawing houses and cliffs on the board and showing my students pictures. However, I knew that they still didn't really know what I meant and couldn't imagine the erosion happening. I realized that if I could simply show them a 2-minute video clip ahead of time, I could have saved hours of precious class time. The students could have understood the problem presented to them better and therefore had more of a reason to solve it. There are thousands more examples like the one above that I am very excited to try in my classroom. With the rise of technology, we have access to so many different images, videos, 3-dimensional graphing simulators; the list goes on and on. The ability to pre-program all of these things into a computer and use them in a lesson can create a learning environment that moves away from mechanically solving equations. Instead, students can see mathematics as exciting and a part of our world.
