Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My team is young and ambitious. They wrestle as an individual and work hard as a team. We are a team filled with many students who have never wrestled before but want to step in to a world that challenges them physically as well as mentally with strategy.

My wrestlers want to make their mark.

This year has been filled with obstacles as we had to endure Hurricane Irma. A hurricane that ravaged the city and kept the kids away from education and their extracurricular activities for over 12 days. A hurricane that pushed many outside of the norms of comfort. Returning to school for many of them was their escape, and being involved in school became their solace.

My Project

After Hurricane Irma, many of my students were found without basic necessities and things to do. I would often get calls asking about whether or not we would be having practice. The students wanted to get away from the reality that Hurricane Irma left them. Unfortunately, just as the survivors of Hurricane Irma, the team has been left needing supplies.

The team wants to put the hurricane behind them and look towards their future season.

Through this project, the team will have wrestling singlets in various sizes and protective headgear that will allow them to compete in wrestling matches more safely and confidently. They will have more comfortable and effective training with hair slickers, knee pads and a pair of wrestling shoes in order to improve their abilities safely. The referee wristbands will allow for a more effective and organized practice while improving their craft. The wrestling dummies will allow the students to safely practice their throwing and submission skills.

Overall, with these tools, the athletes will improve and will be helped in many of their current and future situations.
