Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My caseload is made up of thirty wonderful students in grades kindergarten through fifth. The students I work with come from very diverse backgrounds with many different cultures represented. About 90% of the students are English language learners and speak a different language at home. Communication is a foundation for daily life; however, many of my students lack the basic skills to express themselves and find daily academic and social task challenging. Due to the fact that a significant amount of my students are learning English as a second language, often they lack the basic sound-letter correspondence, do not have basic reading skills, have a limited vocabulary and struggle to comprehend information. Additionally, a significant number of the students come from low income households. My students work hard everyday and I am constantly looking for new ways to get them engaged in lessons and expose them to new experiences!

My Project

I am requesting an iPad for my therapy room in order to engage my students and give them an opportunity to take responsibility and leadership in their learning. When I ask a student what they did over the weekend, the typical answer I get is, "I played on my tablet," usually they are talking about playing some form of video game or watching a show. The majority of them have never used an iPad for learning.

Having an iPad in the therapy room will allow me to teach my students productive ways it can be used in order to enhance their own learning environment!

Some of the ways I would like to use the iPad in my therapy is to teach my students how they can look up unfamiliar words, how they can access current events articles and videos geared towards students and how they can access educational games and activities in order to improve their phonemic awareness skills an practice their reading and sight word knowledge. Additionally, I would like to expose them to Epic, which is an app where they can read or listen to books online. The goal is that this will allow them to take an active role in their own learning and hopefully promote productive use of the technology they have access to.

Finally, I would like to use the iPad in my therapy room to educate parents on ways they can help foster learning at home. Many of the parents I meet with feel they can not help their child with school work because they are not fluent in English. I am hopeful that being able to show them examples of how they can encourage their children to use technology in productive ways at home will foster carryover outside of school.
