Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The right resources can make a world of difference to a child. An iPad in the hands of a nonverbal child can open the door of communication to his family and friends.

This is my fifteenth year teaching preschool students on the autism spectrum.

My first setting was a poor, rural school with limited resources; our technology consisted of an old record player with even older records. It was very difficult to teach without the right materials and over time I have seen what the right resources can bring out in a child. Access to materials, in my opinion, comes only second to a skilled and caring staff. The students in my room may be atypical learners but they are capable of greatness. I envision most of the moving on to more inclusive settings such as a general education classroom. Many of the students I have taught have moved on to general education, inclusion rooms, and one even went to a gifted and talented classroom. Since they are early learners, this time is critical in their development and gaps in development can be bridged with resources and skilled instruction.

My Project

The students in my room are a diverse group with many different skills. Some students are able to engage in beginning literacy and math skills, while others are non-verbal and communication is a major focus for these children. It is my goal to obtain an iPad for every child in my classroom. The primary purpose of this iPad will be to enhance communicative skills for the students who are nonverbal. There are applications that can be used on the iPad so that the students can increase both receptive and expressive language skills such as requesting and labeling. There are many other skills that can also be enhanced through this technology such as academic and social skills. This last point may seem contrary but I have seen students working side-by-side on iPads - sharing ideas and communicating with one another.

I have seen the impact that resources can make in a classroom.

Over the past few years, those who have donated to my classroom through 'Donor's Choose' have made a significant, positive change to my students. The iPad that I am requesting will help all the students increase communication, academic and social skills.
