My Students

"An invisible thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break."

My high school students attend an inner city school in New York.

Many of the students come from instability and lack of support from their families. All of them have the ability to succeed and make the best of their lives, but motivation is truly lacking. They deserve to have influences in their lives who help them recognize their true potentials, and put their talents into practice. With this book as an avenue for instruction, students will be able to enhance their vocabulary, speaking, reading, writing, grammar, creative, critical thinking skills, etc. while enjoying it and giving the learning real, tangible meaning. Endless ideas for activities and assessments have run through my mind, including a "write the next chapter" exercise, letter to the author activity, create your own memoir, etc. These tasks will be truly engaging and meaningful for my students as they read, "An Invisible Thread."

My Project

"An Invisible Thread," is a truly inspiring true story about a beautiful relationship that develops by chance. The relationship begins when an eleven year old pan-handler asks a woman on the street for some change. After brushing off the request and continuing to walk, something stops the woman and makes her turn back. This changed the lives of the two people forever. This book is inspiring for everyone and relates directly to my students' lives. The book discusses several issues and roadblocks that life throws at us. These issues relate directly to the lives of my students. The book discusses hardships faced while living in the projects, family issues related to drugs, abuse, and neglect, etc. The areas described, especially the projects, are the exact locations my students can relate to. This book literally hits home for many of them.

I am a first year English as a Second Language teacher in a school with a difficult environment.

I have no set curriculum, which can be looked at as both a blessing and a curse. I love that I can teach things that I feel are most important and that I am passionate about, but narrowing ideas down and gathering appropriate resources can be a challenge. This book is perfect for my students, as I feel they will be truly inspired and touched by the messages it brings out. Thank you so much!
