Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As if New York City weren't diverse enough, our student body is made up of children from four continents outside North America. It's one of the city's designated international high schools for students who have been in the U.S. for four years or fewer. All of our students speak English as a second language and over 82% of them qualify for the free lunch program.

Many of my students come from countries where art is not offered in their schools. My class is their very first experience with making art. I pride myself on being able to teach anyone how to draw and paint as long as they're willing. However, even with what may be perceived as an inflated view of my teaching prowess, I have been amazed at how quickly (in some cases, immediately) my students have been able to turn out beautiful, accomplished works of art. Even though our school does have a budget for supplies, they get used up quickly. Since this is our first year offering a full art program, there are no supplies left over from previous years.

One of my colleagues and I would like to mount an exhibition at a neighborhood gallery. We would like to display the work properly-framed and sell any works that the students would like to donate toward the cause of procuring more supplies. It is for this reason that we need mat boards and frames to properly showcase the work.

I would love to see my students involved in curating and mounting an exhibit of their work. This would foster collaboration, boost self esteem, encourage parent involvement and raise money for our program. I see this project as a mere beginning to an enterprise with endless potential.
