My Project

In this library, we see every student over the course of eight school days. In order to promote literacy, I am looking to create reading zones that are themed for students to read at. In these new spaces they will practice community service by working together to keep the area welcoming, but also by participating in buddy reading - helping students who read at lower levels to master reading skills. This allows those students to then go back to their homes and neighborhoods to help siblings or friends to do the same. There is a rapid decline in children reading for enjoyment, instead most of their literacy experience is focused on in class material. For many, this forms a negative association with books since much of what they read is not for entertainment. Here in the library we hope to curb that opinion, if only in small ways. By implementing designated reading time and encouraging them to read together, students can discover all that books have to offer. My desire is to continue to create spaces that inspire them to read new books and try new things - so that they go out into their communities and encourage others to do the same!
