Relating Chemistry to Climate Change and Global Warming: This proposal is designed to connect students with climate change and the chemistry of weather and atmospheric heating that is a great and present danger to the health of the planet. Malaria-breeding mosquito areas have increased by some 13% the past three years due to increased rainfall in temperate and mid-latitude countries. Chemistry students will learn how to connect the science of greenhouse heat traps in the IR band with consequent increased precipitation, thermal expansion of water, mixing of glacial melt with ocean salt water, and effects of fresh water on current flows. They will also study the effects of slowing the North Atlantic Oceanic gyre, which dramatically affects weather over Europe (Eastern Atlantic) and Asia (Western Pacific). The importance of exposing students visually to the most remarkable change in the Earth's environment cannot be overstated. I am requesting your support to make it possible for my students to read "An Inconvenient Truth" to help us study this topic.
