Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My year back into the classroom happens to also be my first year teaching Kindergarten. I have appreciated and loved the process of diving into the foundations that all students need academically and social-emotionally. This year has included a lot of reflection, pedagogically and philosophically around what it means to be learning ready.

In building this project, I had two priorities:

To replace a lot of the older, inherited furniture in my classroom that is falling apart (bookshelves and a teacher table).

To request materials that will increase accessibility to learning for all my students (whiteboard markers, flexible seating, sensory tables and materials like sand and magnetic letters).

My class of 30 this year has a few students who came into Kindergarten already identified as students with learning needs. I am sure additional students from this cohort will eventually qualify or classify as students with exceptional learning needs. And, the current state of public school education is one in which general education teachers continue to be tasked with supporting a wide range of learners with resources that are increasingly underfunded, if funded at all. Despite the complexities of navigating this reality, I love teaching, and I love the joy that comes with being such an important part of my students' journeys in learning.

Your contributions to this project would help realize the vision I have that every child in my classroom has all the resources they need to help make learning a joyful and supportive process. Too often, students leave Kindergarten with negative impressions of themselves as learners. I would like all of my students to know that in our shared classroom, their learning styles can always be met due to the flexible and universally diverse scaffolding that is inherently provided.
