An Engaging Butterfly STEM Activity

Help me give my students a learning experience by watching larvae turn into butterflies and learning about the environment!

My Project

I am a 3rd grade ENL teacher in a school consisting of students from a wide variety of backgrounds within a low social economic community. Each student learns in a different way and my goal is to reach each of my kiddos with a variety of STEM activities. What better way to learn about butterflies than with a hands-on STEM activity, watching caterpillars turn into butterflies?

A class butterfly set where each student can adopt a caterpillar, name it, watch it change into a chrysalis, and eventually emerge into a butterfly, is priceless!

What better way to learn about the environment and climate? The culmination of this STEM activity will be releasing our beautiful butterflies!

I've done this project with past classes and it is an amazing experience. My kiddos see the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly happen day by day before their eyes. The butterfly release party bring tears to my eyes seeing their happiness and joy!
