My Students

My students love science! Every week the 5th graders visit the science lab and are able to experience hands-on science activities. Even the most reluctant students come alive in the lab. They love creating, building, and experimenting.

I teach at a Title 1 school in Richmond, VA.

My students come from a low income, high poverty environment. All students are given free breakfast, lunch and a snack. Our school struggles meeting the minimum state requirements and have had a decline in our science scores over the past year. In order to increase our scores, all fifth graders participate in hands-on experiments in our school's science laboratory each week. Many of our students are at least one grade below level in reading and struggle in math. They are easily frustrated in the classroom reading from a textbook or completing a worksheet. The students light up every time they have the opportunity to build a marshmallow catapult, create an erupting volcano, or experiment on how to create the largest roller coaster.

My Project

Picture a scientist...Most people will envision a person in a science apron or lab coat. To help our students act and feel more like a scientist, we are in need of a science apron for each student. Many of the students are very worried about messing up their clothing when working with chemicals or when creating an explosion. A science apron will allow the students to participate freely without the worry of ruining their clothes.

The students I teach begin school with many disadvantages.

Many students lack basic background knowledge that many of us take for granted. For example, what happens when you mix vinegar and baking soda, what yeast is used for, or what a harmonica looks like. Creating explosions, layering colored water, building models of the ocean with clay are just a few of the messy activities we do in our science laboratory. The aprons are needed to protect the students from making a mess of their clothing.
