My Students

Our high school is an urban school. Sixty percent of our students are on fee waivers. Many of the students in this class are self-motivated and love science. Some of them took Physics the previous year and wanted to explore Astronomy further. Other students have never had Physics but have been interested in Astronomy since childhood.

Astronomy is a high interest and I get more questions asked than any other of my science classes.

I believe it can be a springboard for students interested in pursuing Astronomy as a career or as a lifelong amateur.

My Project

My Astronomy students need a portable telescope to move to locations that are acceptable for observing the universe. Winter time inversions are a common event in Utah, occurring primarily during the months of December through February. Prolonged inversions can lead to the high levels of fine particulate pollution. This makes the seeing conditions poor for astronomical observations.

The use of telescope that is transportable and easy to set up encourages my students to enjoy and learn about the universe in a location away from the city lights and inversions.

I have used other ways of encouraging my students to go out into the field and explore our universe, examples include using binoculars to explore the night sky and observations of constellations with the unaided eye and participation in star parties.
