My Students

What do you remember about your first school experiences? Chances are, your memories are happy ones. Because school is fun and exciting when you're 4 or 5 years old! The world is your classroom and every day is a day to celebrate!

Our students are excited, vivacious little learners who come to school each day ready to explore and learn about the world around them.

Our Pre-K program serves students who are 4 and 5 years old in our city's oldest, largest and poorest public housing development. The effects of poverty are real and they are hard for our kids. Drugs, crime, food, violence and money are all issues that our young learners are very familiar with. School is a place for our kids to be safe. It is a place to grow. And it is a place of love and community. Our program works very hard to include all members of a child's family in our educational community throughout the year. We have seen time and again that when parents and families feel comfortable and welcome in our classrooms, our kids feel safer and become more engaged in their own learning. As a result, we work hard to create and plan as many opportunities to bring our families and community together to work as a team on our students' behalf.

My Project

Each year, our Pre-K program holds what we call an "Education Celebration" in place of the typical graduation to Kindergarten. For our students, we want them to stay focused on seeing graduation as something that happens after you finish high school and college. It is special and it takes lots of hard work. But we also want to acknowledge the effort and commitment that each student and family made in their first year in school. So we have an Education Celebration! Education Celebration is a day where our families come out to see the hard work their students have put in during the year and join us as we collectively honor the commitment made to education and learning. We have a pot luck meal, sno cones, face painting, family races, tug-o-war and water play. It is truly a special day and one that students continue to talk about years after they have left our program.

The materials in this project will help us create invitations to send to our families and community.

We will be able to create fun water stations with the spray bottles and reward our students for their hard work with the medals. And our kids will be able to bounce to their little hearts' content in the bounce houses for years to come! But more than anything, we will be able to celebrate the educational journey that our students have begun with the people who have committed to walking with their children!
