Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I want my students to have the opportunity to experience a multitude of ways in which they can be healthy and physically active throughout their entire lives.

I will be the first ever Physical Education teacher in my school.

It is important that I begin building a strong program that will highlight precisely why Physical Education is one of the most important content areas in education. My students study and perform dance and ballet, and I want to expose them to the many skills and concepts that will directly build on and correlate to their dance experience.

By the time students leave the 5th grade, they should have been exposed to and able to perform foundational locomotor skills (galloping, leaping, hopping, running, bear crawling, crab walking, jumping), non-locomotor skills (bending, twisting, turning), manipulative skills (dribbling with hands and feet, striking with short and long implements, kicking, passing, underhand and overhand throwing, catching), and wellness concepts that will help them keep physical activity part of their everyday life. These skills are the necessary skills involved in any sport, play, fitness endeavors, or life-long adventures, and this equipment will help my 4th and 5th-grade students meet National Standards.

My Project

Skill acquisition is the "thing" that precedes the assurance of a physically active life. Children and young adolescents tend to gravitate towards activities they're comfortable engaging in, and part of what makes them comfortable is the exposure to a variety of environments that allow them to harness their personal interests and strengths to experience joy and fulfillment. The ability to make fitness and health a part of everyday life requires the confidence and competence in one's abilities, and all students deserve the opportunity to explore a number of ways to stay active. This equipment will help provide the doors to future adventures.

To be completely honest, this equipment is only half of what they would need since we are completely starting from scratch.

However, this will give us a great start towards building the kind of PE program that will help us make physical activity a personal and enjoyable part of education at our school.
