My Students

Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it and who often have to move in with relatives after a job loss. There are some families that are homeless and need more assistance. Many also come from military families. We have many cultures represented at our school. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Our staff continually goes above and beyond to help their students. The school is based on the idea that we are all part of the same team, and we work towards helping all students. Almost 100% of certified staff work as mentors during their personal time to give students who need extra help the attention they need. We are working hard to make sure our students are prepared for the future. We have added a Makerspace and are now working to extend our STEAM clubs, and we are encouraging girls to participate in STEAM activities.

My Project

I coordinate a STEM club that has 65 participants. This year we are refining our requirements and want to encourage students to complete all the offered stations.

STEM education is important, and many of the future jobs require STEM education.

We have a lot of different STEM experiences and sometimes it is difficult to get the students to leave their favorite activities to try some of those a little outside their comfort zone.

I would like to offer students the chance to earn a dog tag or medal based on the number of stations that they complete. I think this will motivate the students to try more activities. Once they try them, they tend to feel more comfortable with them, and then will go back to those in the future.

Those that do at least half of the activities will get a dog tag, and those doing over 75% of the activities will earn a medal.

We run STEM Club for 6 months, meeting weekly. This give students a lot of opportunities to develop skills from many different type of activities, from coding to robotics.
