My students are English language learners. Most come from the rural countryside of China and come to our school with little or no English. It's up to me to build their vocabulary and connect them to the world around them with prior knowledge. I do this through technology. Knowledge is power.
My students are from a low economic background.
They appreciate everything that is given to them. In order to provide, their parents work very long hours and don't have too much time to spend with their children. Quite often, language becomes a barrier in communicating with one another. It's important for me to bridge the gap between them. Their parents have a dream for their children. They want them to succeed and have a better life. They realize that their children can do that through the American Education System. I never saw students have such drive and determination. The vision in our school is to encourage communication and speaking skills. In order to do that we need to provide rich language experiences to build students' confidence in the English language.
My Project
Everyday I use our smartboard (a big electronic chalkboard) to teach. The students are exposed to daily lists of vocabulary words with pictures, clips from the Internet, and interactive work on the board to build language and analytical skills. This takes a tremendous amount of preparation on my part and I need a laptop to use at home and school to plan. The students will learn how to be effective communicators and stronger readers with an expansive vocabulary.
The project will benefit my class for their futures.
In order to succeed, they need to keep up with the rigorous curriculum in the fourth grade. I can provide various, rich learning experiences by the use of technology. It's important for young children to have a love of learning and a keep developing passion for learning/curiosity until college or a career. Technology helps bridge the gap between students that don't have many life experiences or limited vocabulary. Let's help them succeed!
