This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Our elementary school is located in SE Washington, DC, where 97 percent of all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch and free breakfast; and 25 percent of all students receive special education services. In my general education kindergarten classroom, all students with or without Individual Educational Plans (IEPs) are provided a positive learning environment that addresses both their academic and social emotional needs as well as embrace their strengths; while giving them a sense of belonging.
Most of these students have academic challenges in either reading and/or mathematics or have behavioral challenges; and will benefit tremendously from additional technology in the kindergarten classroom.
It should be noted, however, that all of our students are amazing, full of energy, and enthusiastic about learning! They come to school every day ready to learn something new, and have so much opportunity for growth and the potential for excellence, if provided good, daily instruction with the appropriate resources!
All of my students come to school excited to learn; and filled with lots of enthusiasm. One of their greatest joys in the classroom is working on our computers. In the kindergarten classroom, the computer station is very popular during small group rotation, which occurs daily in the morning for reading; and in the afternoons for math. With additional updated technology in the classroom, students will have more time to complete either their reading and/or math interventions, which extends their learning.
In addition, the kindergarten classroom is a very busy, noisy learning environment during small group instruction; and our students would benefit tremendously from new headphones to block out the noise.
Currently, our broken and/or ineffective headphones are not working.
Its commonly held that "classroom technology can open new worlds for all students, but especially those from less advantaged communities." Research has shown that "students who reported using computers moderately in the classroom did slightly better on assessments than those who did not have access to technology at all....."
Finally, kindergarten is the foundation of K-12 learning; and research has shown that our students benefit most from a quality learning environment that involves hands-on technology. In this day and age, our kindergarteners must be both prepared and equipped for first grade and beyond. That being the case, your generous donations are an investment in our kindergarteners' future!
