My Project

Middle School, our shared educational canvas, is located in the city of Richmond, Virginia. As a Special Education teacher, I work hand in hand with my General Education colleague in our collaborative classroom setting. Together, we teach English/Language Arts (ELA) to our 6th-grade students, each bringing our unique strengths to the table. In our classroom, iPads will be a shared tool, assisting us in using visuals, learning platforms, interactive graphic organizers, text-to-speech/speech-to-text features, vocabulary, and learning strategies. Today's students are motivated by technology that is aligned with instruction. Therefore, iPads will bridge the gap with teacher instruction and encourage students to read and comprehend, a journey we embark on together.

Students must learn to read fluently and comprehend what they have read independently.

My goal for this project is to use iPads to bring relevance to literacy. iPads will increase interest in the goals and objectives presented in class. Using prior knowledge, students can connect facts, details, and ideas with the instruction given during whole and small groups. Students can follow along on their iPads as a SMART Board is used during teacher-facilitated guided practice, providing students with strategies to practice and work independently to complete reading assignments.

Our collaborative classroom is home to exceptional students, each with unique challenges in reading and written language, including decoding, phonics, fluency, writing, and comprehension. These students, despite their challenges, are acutely aware of their reading levels and are determined to bridge the gap. Their unwavering determination to improve their reading skills is not just a goal, but a journey we are all on together, inspiring us with their resilience and commitment.
