This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach at a Title I school in Virginia where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. The students in my classroom are students with learning and emotional disabilities.
Many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty focusing in school. Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in my class reads at a kindergarten level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population. Special education teachers are expected to deliver excellent instruction in all academic areas but are often the last to receive resources to meet students needs.
This project would help my students' significantly close their learning gaps in reading and math.
The addition of two iPad minis with protective covers would give my students a much needed boost of practice in the areas of reading and math.
My students would be able to access district-purchased programs as well as different apps to help improve their skills.Students who are confident in their reading and math abilities will be ready to face the challenges of higher education and the workplace.
This means we have to give them the ability to learn both independently and collaboratively. It means turning our focus away from the traditional model we may be more comfortable with to more real-world contexts. It also means teaching my students to utilize the technology that exists today so that they will be able to comfortably incorporate it in their educational journey.
