Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My children have learning disabilities. Some are as young as kindergartners who have expressive language difficulties in Spanish and English and others as old as 8th grade middle schoolers one of which has a cleft palate and enjoys lip gloss. Some are on the autism S

spectrum.

Others have auditory processing disorders and speech language deficits. Many of my students are recent immigrants to this country and community.

While my kids have learning deficits, they are caring, funny, hardworking and kind. The older children are often be found caring for and checking in on their younger siblings or family members. There is a real sense of love and community. In spite their challenges, they find room in their hearts to ask about me and my day. They work hard and celebrate small victories and are proud each others successes.

My children have dreams of becoming chefs, police officers, professional soccer players, and doctors. They may have obstacles to overcome but they have goals and dreams nonetheless.

My Project

This iPad will help me engage my children who have varying intellectual abilities. Through the use of various applications, I can differentiate instruction for kindergarteners to middle schoolers. The camera and iPad will help younger learners with expressive language deficits engage with songs, reading culturally diverse books, and help parents with modeling better ways to use tablets.

This tablet and camera will help my verbal and non-verbal students on the autism spectrum by differentiating instruction.

I can use it with my non-verbal students with AAC core boards to help them communicate. It can help my lower verbal students expand on their utterances and provide more details to make their wants, needs, and ideas known.

This set up will help expose my most communicatively challenged children to stories, songs, communication options with various programs such as Proloquo, TouchChat, Pecs, and stories with core words.
