My Project

“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” - Pablo Picasso

In our Montessori classroom, we give students small group lessons on targeted skills, then give them the freedom to repeat, explore, and expand on the concepts.

As a result, it is difficult to plan at the beginning of a year how many supplies we will need, and which we will run out of. The Montessori phrase is we "follow the child" through observation: seeing both what interests them, what they need both academically and emotionally, and then guiding them through appropriate work.

This year, I have followed my students on an art explosion. We clearly needed some art therapy after the last two years of virtual learning. When we are having a tough week - sounds like time for an art lesson! My students have dug in deep to watercolor painting this year, exploring many different examples, tips, and strategies. We have found that our cheaper brushes are falling apart, and they want to spend more time making their own colors on palettes. We also are entering a time of the year where we have many "End of Year" projects that will need clay, clay tools, acrylic paint, markers, glitter and sand. We organize these materials on individual wooden trays on our art shelf.
