Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students will be the newest members of our high school family, including both English Language Learners and general education students. Our students come to us at a range of language proficiencies and a wide range of life experiences. Some of our students are lifelong Bronx residents; others are recently arrived immigrants from countries all over the world.

All of our incoming 9th grade students have shared a challenging end to their most recent school year.

As almost all students of color, many from low-income households, they have been some of the hardest hit by tragic COVID-19 losses, inequitable access to resources during remote learning, and institutionalized racism; all challenging them as they work toward educational success. Our students deserve to start their high school career with the materials they need to thrive.

My Project

As teachers, it is important to us that our students feel empowered to navigate their identities and the world around them. Our year-long curriculum explores identity through the investigation and critiques of personal, social, and other environmental factors. We hope that our classroom becomes a space where students feel valued and confident in their respective identities. We also want to create a learning environment where they feel equipped to challenge injustices and attacks against their individual and collective identities.

The materials that we have listed will help students engage in the kind of learning and critical thinking that affirms their lives and encourages them to participate in literary activism and advocacy in our classroom and beyond.

We have included Angie Thomas' The Hate U Give in English and Spanish to provide access to the literature for our students who are English language learners. We have also included other necessary materials such as writing utensils, journals, and loose leaf paper to begin this exploration of identity and criticality in order to amplify student voice.
