This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine moving to a new country. You walk into a classroom and you may not have ever had any formal education before. You have never read or written and you have this smiling teacher talking to you in a language you don't understand. These are the students I teach every day. I work in a large school with a very high immigrant population in Florida. Most of my students come from the Caribbean islands such as the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, and many more. The stress of moving to a new country overwhelms most of them. Learning a new language, making new friends, adjusting to our formal school setting, are just some of the many obstacles they face. I feel through Physical Education and Team Sports is one avenue that helps them cope with these new challenges. Allows them to open up to their new peers, take part in team building, gives them a language that all students share through competition, as well as gives them a chance to do something that they done many times before in their country of birth. They hold the American Dream, but need the tools to make them successful.

My Project

I'm requesting the use of baseball equipment for my Team Sports class. Baseball is Americas past time and what better way to expose my students to American culture than the great game of baseball. Unfortunately, baseball is a sport that requires safety equipment in order to play the game the correct way. Things Like catchers gear, helmets, gloves, and apparel keep the players safe from injury. In order for my students to get the full experience of the game these pieces of equipment along with thing such as baseballs, and bats are a requirement. These items will go along way to bringing Americas past time to the present.
