My Students

I teach highly motivated, inquisitive students at one of the largest schools in our state, and yet these students do not always have access to opportunities or resources that they deserve.

Our students are hard-working, eager to learn, high achieving individuals.

The school is located in a very diverse region of the city, and therefore, our students speak many different languages and come from many different countries. The school building is overcrowded, under-funded and in considerable need of an overhaul, as much of its interior has not been updated for fifty years.

My Project

The novel "Americanah," by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, is a novel that we need to get into the hands of our IB English: Literature students. It will give them the opportunity to gain a new perspective through reading, analyzing, discussing and writing about this acclaimed work. The texts that are used in this course are specifically chosen to help meet the following goals.

- introduce students to a range of literary works of

different periods, genres, styles and contexts

- broaden the students’ perspective through the study

of works from other cultures and languages

- introduce students to ways of approaching and

studying literature, leading to the development of an

understanding and appreciation of the relationships

between different works

This book hits them all. One review of the book states, "It is not a stretch to say that her finely observed new book, which combines perfectly calibrated social satire and heartfelt emotion, stands with Invisible Man and The Bluest Eye as a defining work about the experience of being black in America."--Ruth Franklin

Given that this novel is about the experience of being black in the United States, it is an excellent tool for our students to be able to reflect and analyze their own perspectives of race and cultural norms.
